The TMA and member companies work closely with the relevant bodies to provide intelligence regarding the sale of illicit tobacco products.
HMRC’s Tackling Tobacco Smuggling Strategy, published in 2015, acknowledges the productive working relationship with the tobacco industry in addressing illicit trade.
The TMA members and the wider industry actively provide HMRC with information regarding the sale of illicit tobacco so that enforcement measures can be taken. The Industry also responds to requests for assistance or examinations (e.g. identifying packs as domestic or of foreign provenance). Typically the industry will provide thousands of instances of each of these services each year.
The TMA are also members of the Scottish Anti-Illicit Trade Group (SAITG) which has a pivotal role in bringing together the public and private sectors with a clear focus and strategic aim of reducing the scale, impact and cost of illicit trade throughout Scotland.
