The Chancellor Rishi Sunak MP delivered the Government’s Budget on Wednesday 11 March 2020 .
Responding, TMA Director Rupert Lewis said:
“Taxes on tobacco products already account for up to 90% of the retail price. Today’s announcement to reintroduce the duty escalator for cigarettes and significantly raise the duty rate for hand rolling tobacco, will only encourage consumers to buy through black market channels. The Treasury already lost £1.8 billion in 2017/18 due to the illegal tobacco trade. While we welcome the announcement that the Government intends to increase support for Trading Standards and HMRC, repeated tax hikes only makes the challenge even more difficult.”
