30 Oct UK Tobacco Industry Comment University of Bath/King’s College report
Giles a Roca, Director General of the TMA commented:
“This survey is simply not an accurate reflection of the prices smokers pay in 2017. Following the introduction of minimum pack sizes and a minimum excise tax earlier this year, the lowest priced cigarettes are now £7.35, while prices at premium end of the UK tobacco market have remained about the same at just over £10.
“The prices we see on the supermarket shelf for any product category vary to suit the budgets of different customers. Tobacco is no different so, ultimately, all this report confirms is that retailers and manufacturers provide a range of pricing options to cater for different consumers. In the end this Government funded report, that cost taxpayers £350,000, has simply confirmed how a competitive market works.”
